From Yahoo News by Rick Limpert:

COMMENTARY | Former Atlanta talk show host and businessman Herman Cain has been crisscrossing the country visiting states that matter to find out if he has the support it will take to run for president. Visits to Iowa and Missouri have given us a clue that Cain is close to declaring his run for the nation’s highest office.

Cain has been playing this well. He’s picking and choosing his appearances, and is not only talking to the people but also listening. As a radio talk show host, he was a very good listener, and you could tell he loves people. His jabs at President Obama are doing more than energizing his base.

Saying that “the U.S. has become a ‘nation of crises’ under President Barack Obama” serves many purposes for Cain. He knows that Obama’s job approval rating is so bad right now that he wants to show he’s the man to take on the president. Cain is also a relatively fresh face on the national scene, so he’s making sure his name gets out to the public as much as possible.

Cain has also made a strategic decision to saddle up to Tea Partiers. He refutes the claims that the Tea Party is a racist organization, and he doesn’t mind being called a Tea Party candidate. Dwelling on Tea Party core issues like having a limited government and governmental fiscal responsibility has endeared him to many Tea Party members across the country.

Cain’s next stop is New Hampshire, where another early primary will be held. Also trekking through “The Granite State” will be Mississippi Gov. Haley Barbour, former Pennsylvania Sen. Rick Santorum, and former Minnesota Gov. Tim Pawlenty — all regarded as contenders in 2012. Cain will appear Friday at a rally at St. Anselm College.

A recent Gallup poll puts Cain second among Republican hopefuls, right behind Mike Huckabee. This is only the second time Cain has even been included in Gallup national poll. He’s generating what he wants at this point: momentum. Cain is fairly well known in Georgia, but he’s succeeding at getting his message out nationwide.

Herman Cain is the former chairman of the Federal Reserve Bank of Kansas City and CEO of the Godfather’s Pizza chain. He has never held elected office, but many people feel that is what we may need right now. The race is on.

Rick Limpert cover sports, technology and politics in and around Atlanta. He’ll be watching Herman Cain and the other candidates as we head to 2012.
